GENEVA, NEW YORK — Belhurst Winery president Mr. Duane Reeder proudly announces winning the highest honor in the Indy International Wine Competition, the Wine of the Year 2010 for the Belhurst Semi-Dry Riesling 2009. In addition, the Competition awarded Belhurst Winery Best in Class for the Belhurst Gewurztraminer 2009 and Belhurst Semi-Dry Riesling 2009, for a total of 14 medals from this competition. Belhurst Winery has won 73 wine medals in 2010. The Indy International Wine Competition is the largest scientifically organized and independent wine competition in the United States, the world's largest wine market.
Commercial wine entries were evaluated by distinguished judges consisting of wine writers and winemakers, winegrowers and enologists, chefs and sommeliers from Napa to New York, from Miami to Chicago. Belhurst Winery's winning entry was among nearly 2,700 wines in the competition. Wines from 15 countries as far away as France, Australia, Chile and Spain were judged on appearance, aroma, taste and aftertaste by 14 panels of judges. In all, 52 judges from the United States and Canada evaluated the entries.
“Fifteen countries entered a fascinating range of wines that represent an amazing diversity,” said Christian Butzke, associate professor in Purdue's Department of Food Science. “We are extremely pleased and proud to showcase our Semi-Dry Riesling, a wine which is a true hallmark of the Finger Lakes region,” said Duane Reeder. “Vintage after vintage, our Rieslings are a guest favorite.”
The Indy International Best in Show trophy is now on display in the Belhurst Wine & Gift Shop.
